Worrisome Developments in Sri Lanka
I have been continuing to assess what is going on in Sri Lanka. There seems to be a ray of hope, though. General Fonseka's wife has been granted a hearing to be allowed to have the General be seen by his family and receive medical attention. Furthermore, I have just reviewed reports that the General has been granted the right to appeal his detention.
Although I welcome these developments, the question is whether the Judiciary in Sri Lanka will be truly independent. These developments are happening as the President assumes even more powers. He is right not only President, but also Defense, Finance and now Information Minister. I really like to know how he can do all four jobs. I am sure he has permanent secretaries that run the Departments on a day-to-day basis. But, this massive consolidation of power is wrong and should be fought by all the democratic forces in the Country. Whether they have the will and the ability to do it is another issue.
For now President Rajapaksa has the reigns and does not seem to want to give up. As with other despots, he has some profound questions to answer. What happened to his promise of democracy? What happpened to bringing people together? What happened to the unity that Rajapksa promised? What about the four million votes that General Fonseka received?

As Winston Churcill once said, democracy is the worst form of Government..but he also said that show me a better way and I'll be happy to consider it. Rajapaksa, from what I am seeing, seems to believe that he is the savior.....there are many like him...Chavez in Venezuela, Khamieni in Iran, the clown gadhaffi in Libya....The voice of the people will be heard....that's for sure!!!
