Walter Cronkite: A Personal Retrospective
Walter Cronkite passed away. For those of us who love the news, love our world and yearn for the "truth", Walter Cronkite represented that tradition. I remember the time when he ended his broadcasts with his famous "that's the way it is". I also remember his tribute during the Iran hostage Crisis when he recounted every day the hostages were held in Iran. I also remember vividly when he finished his last broadcast. I respected him because he had the courage to speak out when necessary. His commentary on the Tet Offensive was quite telling. When he had the courage to speak out after Tet in Vietnam, that sealed his reputation as someone who had to courage to speak up when others didn't want to or didn't have the courage to. Bob Woodruff did a masterful job remembering Walter Cronkite:
For those of us who think about our world and how to make it better, we have lessons to learn from Walter Cronkite. The responsbility is a solemn one. I for one intend to take Mr. Cronkite's admonition to "hang in there", keep learning and reflecting.
