US & World Arms Spending: A Brief Retrospective



Our world continues to be as dangerous as ever. Yet, we continue to somehow be stuck in old ways. Monday saw Hillary Clinton sign an arms pact with India for 10 Billion Dollars. It will no doubt help the US Economy. But, the fact that we will have engineers building things that has no true value beyond the fact that it is aimed towards killing leaves a lot to be desired.


The United States continues to be the leading spender of arms in the world. According to Spiri, the Swedish Think tank, The United States spends more than the the rest of the top ten countries in the world combined. Yet, some in America think that America is not spending enough. They are fighting Secretary Gates attempts to reorient the massive resources America is spending towards a more realistic assessment of how the battles should be fought. There has to be a better way to manage our world than to be witness to such scenes of tragedy.

If this is true, then we are arming the enemy of our ally, Pakistan, in the fight against the Taliban. Why are we doing this? To gain more influence in India than Russia typically has? If we don't do it then someone else will? If Gates is cutting Pentagon procurement, then the defense contractors have to look elsewhere for their sales?
