The US Sunday Public Affair Shows: A Brief Recap
The U.S. Sunday Public Affair Shows are never a disappointment. The three majors (ABC, CBS & NBC) featured a duel between U.S. Vice President Biden and Former Vice President Cheney. I found the exchange to be frankly hillarious and the subsequent "roundtables" to be even more so. Joe Biden was insistent as to how Dick Cheney was a fine fellow but was misinformed. Dick Cheney struck back during his appearance on ABC by noting how clueless the Adminstration was. It was a battle of talking points without any substantive contribution to the discussions at hand.
What I did find insightful was comments by General Jones, The National Security Advisor, about dealings with Iran. During his appearance on Fox News, He came out and said that the Policy of the United States is to encourage regime change in Iran. Although this should be welcome in Iranian Opposition Circles, it plays into the hands of the ruling gang in Tehran right now who will continue to push the fiction of foreign interference while ignoring the continued profound challenges the country faces today.
The program I found the most insightful was Fareed Zakaria's GPS:
I am thankful that Paul Volcker spoke up for how screwed up Congress has become. How can the Congress claim to do its' job when key officials are yet to be confirmed after over a year? I am not surprised when there are people like Demint and Inholf who want to bury Obama. These guys are the more radical of the bunch. There are guys like McConnell who have the same agenda but have a more subtle way to undermine the President. What Volcker noted was how Government has become as dysfunctional as it has become. There is a continued need for adults and grown-ups to step up. As Dr. King said, the fierce urgency of now is ever more important. Paul Volcker underscored it in his comments.
