The Tragedy in the Philippines

I read with horror at the horrific killings in the Philippines. Although I am glad to see that the Government moved swiftly, the fact remains that Phillipines is a society dominated by powerful families while the people on main street suffer. I was fascinated when I saw the rise of the boxer Manny Pacquiao and how he overcame the odds. Politics and power seem to be a family affair in the Philippines. What is even more shameful is both the so-called families who are feuding over local control are allies of Gloria Arroyo, the incumbent President. What I found especially shocking was that Filippino tradition prohibits the harming of women and journalists. Yet, women were raped and then brutally murdered. What is it about power that corrupts so many? Where has all the honor gone?

I think that The Philippines has yet to fully recover from the ravages of the Marcos Years. President Ramos at least tried because he had the discipline as a ex-military man to steer the country towards a reasonble path. Then, the country elected Joseph Estrada. The Muslim insurgency reared its' ugly head and it continues on even today. With all that the Philippines has had to contend with, I wonder why has the Lord forsaken the Philippines? I also wonder if Senator Aquino can truly steer the Philippines towards the path of modernity? I do know that he can't do no worst that the previous two Presidents who have been utter disappointments.

The gentleman who lost his wife and his sisters, Ismael Mangudadatu, has filed his nomination papers to run for Govenor of the southern Province. I hope he wins and maybe wakes up and at least shakes things up in his province.
