The Need For A "Neutral" & "Fair" Observer of Society
Leonard Downie, the former Washington Post Editor, has spreadheaded a report calling for a transformation and public support of news gathering in America. This is available at http:www.cjr.org. With the way traditional journalism is under threat, it seems to be a cry in the wilderness. But, it is something that should be looked at and considered to nsure a level fo accountability and transparency that does not exist today.
As companies continue to grow, banks continue to expand and governments seem to be less capable of doing their job, the need to have a strong 4th estate is ever more. The rise of alternative media and the "citizen journalist" is giving the big boys a moment of pause. Those of us who are Web 2.0 converts and are actively working to build platforms for people to trust and have confidence in must work to continue to be responsible and engaging. As traditional media continue to figure out their role, new media has to figure out its role AND insure that it plays the constructive role that is vital for it to succeed. I sensed this dilema as I listened to HuffPost's CEO's discussions at the Web 2.0 Conference in San Francisco.
One thing is for sure: There are always possiblities!!!
