The Arrest of General Fonseka: The Day After
The President of Sri Lanka, Mahinda Rajipaksa, has dissolved Parliament. This is a day after the arrest of the President's Chief Rival, General Fonseka. It seems to me that the President's paranoia seems to have taken a dangerous turn for the worst. The problem is that the President will see to it that his party will have enough of a majortiy to do pretty much what he wants.
The march to dictatorship seems to be in full force. The President of Sri Lanka needs to realize that he is President of a divided country. 4 Million people voted for General Fonseka. Discounting 4 million people is a dangerous precedence. The charges against the General, in my view, are just laughable. If the General was plotting to overthrow the President, assasinate his family and take over while Army Commander, why didn't the President remove him then? It is a political move to perpetuate the President's rule along with his brother and the rest of the gang around the President. What I find ironic is how Sri Lanka and Iran are marching along the same path. Sri Lanka is at least trying to do it legally--or so it says. This is a drama that is yet to play itself out.
