SP Week-End II (2/20/2010): Haiti....
Haiti has disappeared from the headlines now. But, the suffering goes on!!!
America has two Ex-Presidents on the case. Bill Clinton is working his contacts and his charm to browbeat the world into doing what it needs to do to help Haiti. I have also seen reports that George W. Bush is to serve as the U.S. Special Envoy to Haiti. I welcome both annoucements because I view this as critical. I am also quite proud to display the Clinton/Gore Haiti Fund Banner in all my "outsiders" site to underscore the need not to forget Haiti even though the World seems to have moved on to more sexier focal points like Iran. Succeeding in Haiti will underscore whether the World can overcome or not.
As Haiti struggles to recover, there is of course the historical baggage. There are Five Families that seem to control the country. This is also further complicated by the discovery of Oil. The President, Prevail, seems to be in the back pocket of the five families. There has been practically no Government since the 90's when Aristide was spirited out of the country by the United States. The United States and the United Nations have quite a task to rebuild a country from scratch. In the meantime, the millions who are hungry and homeless have to wait. Will the World be brave enough to remember those on Haiti's Main Street who have no food, no water and no shelter? That's the challenge that the World has to contend with.
