SP Week-End (6/19/2010: Krygstan: What now?
I have been seeing reports of the calamity in Kyrgyzstan. Al Jazeera just ran a report while accompany the Krgyz Acting Leader as she visited Osh, the Second Largest City. The estimates are over 400,000 people who have been displaced. According to the acting leader, the death estimates are around 2,000 people.
As I write this, the UN has launched a worldwide appeal for aid. What is crucial is to realize how this country is to the US effort in Afghanistan. If Kyrgyzstan goes, then US strategy will become evermore precarious. I don't envy the acting leader of Kyrgyzstan, because the choices before her are not pleasant choices at all. What is even more worrisome is the position of the military. The military brass seems to be split and that might be even more of a problem going forward.
It is quite a powder cake indeed....
