SP Week-End (5/16/2010): The Tragedy in Thailand
Thailand is on Fire!!!
As I have seen the unrest and the Government's attempt to crush it, it clearly appears that Thailand will not be the same. What is frankly disheartening is how cherished institutions have begun to be questioned. As I read through the Front page of the New York Times Story, I have to wonder what the Thai Prime Minister and the so-called Red Shirt movement leaders are thinking at this stage.
Thailand has to solve its' social problems. It is a country that is divided between the Rich and the Poor. I understand that the Royal Family has amassed quite a fortune during the reign of the Present King. I also admire the Present King's ability to have pulled things together in moments of crisis. Should the King's Children now grow up and face the problems?
If I probably suffered the same deprivation that the dispossessed in Thailand have suffered, I would probably protest in light of all that has gone on. But, I have to wonder if there is a better way. I also view the utter irresponsbility of one man which has contributed to this instability: Thaksin. I also think that the King's Privvy Council has been just as responsible. It seems to me that the King should have reigned in the Privy Council and members of the Royal Family who should have seen "beyond the now" and not work to protect their short-term business interests.
The open question as the new week begins is whether Thailand survives. It is an open question.
