SP Week-End (3/28/2010): Thoughts on the Media
I was gratified this week as I saw the advent of a new show on CNN: John King USA. John King, who served as White House Correspodent and was the initial anchor on State of the Union, was given Lou Dobbs' old time slot. The analysis is right on, the questioning is tough and the format is very interesting. I especially like how he has created a "PC-Like" interface. I wish him well.
During this week on CNN, I also caught a glimpse of Anderson Cooper's special on the Gangs of Hollenbeck. Hollenbeck is a section of Los Angeles, north of Downtown that is Gang Country. One of the interesting statistics reported was the number of gang members. There is an estimated 6,800 gang members in Hollenbeck. US Justice Department figures reflect that there are over One Million Gang Members in the Country. To put things in perspective, the entire sworn personnel of the Los Angeles Police Department is 9,600 Personnel.
In the midst of so much hopeless, there is one ray of hope and opportunity. Homeboy Industries, started by Father Gregory Boyle, shows a way out of gangs. What they do is quite amazing to help turn things around. But, when I saw one of the guys wondering whether he would live to be 40 was heartbreaking. That's why the need to invest in the people and education is ever more.
Society has to have the courage not to give up.
