SP Week-End (2/20/2010): Israel Above the Law

This past week saw Israel's ugly side show up again. A Hamas military commander was assasinated in Dubai. Why he was in Dubai, what he was doing and what led to his assasination are all legitimate questions that is being debate in Government and Academic Circles right now. I will not be discussing it here. What I continue to be concerned about is Israel acting above the law.

What I have been disturbed about has been the fact that the people implicated so far had legitimate passports with stolen identities. What I also find even more disturbing is how Mossad had informed the UK's MI6 about what they had planned out. What they also did was to undermine one of the more pliable Government in the Arab World who at least has the ability to bridge the grand canyon that exists between Israel and the Arab World. As Israel continues its brutal embrago of Gaza, continues land grabs in the West Bank and forces the Palestinian Authority ever more in the margins, when will it all stop?

As Israel continues on, it just came out with a statement slamming Iran. I have written on Iran's record. But, for Israel to slam Iran for violating International law when she has been at the forefront of violating International law is simply laughable. This is the the statement that the Israeli Foreign Ministry released as the IAEA came out with the report on Iran which I wrote on in SP's sister site, Outsider Views:

The latest report of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) deals more severely and clearly than previously with the military aspects of Iran's nuclear program.

The report, the first issued under new IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano, establishes that the agency has reliable and extensive information regarding past and ongoing activities that testify to the military nature of the Iranian program.

The report draws attention to egregious activities such as the initializing of uranium enrichment to a 20 percent level and continued construction of the enrichment plant in Qom, both of which reveal Iran's true intentions. The report also reflects Iran's lack of cooperation with the IAEA's investigation into its activities.

Iran continues to systematically violate the resolutions of the U.N. Security Council and the IAEA Board of Directors. It is incumbent upon the international community and its institutions to apply effective sanctions against Iran without delay in order to make clear the heavy price Iran will pay should it continue to advance its nuclear program.

Israel is at war and believes that its security transcends everything else. But, Israel has also spied on its' biggest patron, the United States. Jonathan Pollard is one example. It seems to me that the Goverment of Israel at some stage should overcome this paranoia and figure out a different way of thinking. That's why I think that PeaceNow and also the rise of J Street in the United States continue to be hopeful signs of potential change. Israel is not as uniform as one is led to believe and whether the politics of it will truly reflect a genuine and committed push towards peace and reconicilation is a problem that only Israelis (both Arab and Jew) have to solve. I wonder if they have the courage to do so.
