SP Week-End (1/3/2010): The Mexican Drug War
I have just been reviewing reports of the "success" that Mexicon's Felipe Calderon War on Drugs campaign has had. A major drug kingpin was killed a few weeks ago. The gang then killed the family of one of the Marines who was involved in the fight and was himself also killed. Now, I see reports that the Kingpin's brother was also captured.
What I fail to see in this so-called War is how this problem ignores the the fact that the underlying problems facing Mexico and the rest of Central America is economic. When there are no jobs people will be willing soldiers in the war. When there continues to be a demand for the poison these kingpins produce, the war will continue. There is, of course the collateral damage in it all. As these Kingpins get picked off one by one, there will be others who will take their place. Furthermore, there is going to be even more turf battles to figure out how to split the spoils. One collateral damage was one unfortunate soul from Southern California. The gentleman who was killed was out in Mexico visiting his Wife's family when he was hauled away and killed off. He was a Community Activitist and elected Official of the El Monte School Board who apparently was another victim of this war that seems to have no end.
I am convinced that the cancer of drugs must be eradicated. I wonder whether this brutality is the answer.
