SP Week-End (1/23/2010): The Persian Gulf Is Going Nuclear!!!
The Persian Gulf is going nuclear!!! This should not be a surprise especially in light of the continued tug of war between Iran and the International Community over the Iranian nuclear program. Iran has been in the news. But, other players in the Gulf and beyond are marching along with their programs. I have periodically written on this in SP's sister site, Outsider Views.
There is a provision in the US Atmoic Energy Act known as Section 123 which provides a framework for countries to deal in Civilian Nuclear Technology. The United Arab Emirates signed such an agreement and made a case to overcome the objections of the Pro-Israeli Lobby in Washington. To me, that is the biggest achievement of all.
All the players in the Gulf will pursue this in a major way and there seems to be no stop to it. The challenge is to manage it responsibly. The genie is out of the bottle and it cannot be stopped.
