SP Week-End (1/10/2010): A Brief Round Up of the US Sunday Talk Shows
The US Sunday Talk shows on January 10 again proved to be a treasure trove of Information. The leading topics on all the key networks were the Economy, the comments of Harry Reid, the US Senate Majority leader and the 2010 Elections.
There are many Senators who appeared. Joe Lieberman and John McCain are right now traveling the world and talked about their "findings" and about the need to take the fight to the Taliban and Al Qaeda. The one that I found the most fascinating was Michael Steele. He appeared on NBC"s Meet the Press with Tim Kane, the Former Governor of Virginia who is serving as the Chair of the Democratic National Committee. Steele noted that he had 8 Million Cash on Hand, had already one a number of off elections and was doing OK. Compared to him, the Democrats appeared to be in a state of disarray. I found to be in agreement with him in light of all the disarray going on right now.
As I listened to the shows, I thought about the comments of Harry Reid. He is in trouble in Nevada. He has profound challenges in the Senate keeping the caucus together. I wonder what he was thinking when he talked about Barack Obama last year. There is precedence on all of this right now. I remember the elections of 1982 and the Republican bloodbath. With all that the President has had going for him now, there could have been a better way than this. This relentless focus on healthcare will bear fruit. But the question becomes at what cost?
The Economy continues to be a major problem. I was shocked to see the job loss as I have seen. As one of those folks on "main street", I am trying to be optimistic. But, when I see jobs not there, I get very worried. The need to be able to keep a optimstic outlook is paramount. But when Dr. Roemer, the President's Chief Economic Advisor, tries to spin the report, it presents a major problem. As I listened to her during her appearance on ABC's This Week, I was nearly speechless. It is clear that the Obama Adminstration does not have an answer besides spending more money. No one seems to know what happens when the massive Government intervention will end? What is clear is that there are a lot of uknowns and many more minefields to navigate. The end game is not yet in sight. The lines in the sand are clearly drawn, though:
