Malaysia's Anwar Ibrahim is on trial for sodomy. I have been monitoring his trial and his application to have the charges thrown out. The ruling has come down and the judge has rejected his application because the judge felt that the integrity of the State's case was not compromised even though the accuser had a relationship with a member of the prosecution team.
When I first read on the strategy, I viewed it as a shot in the dark at best. Anwar is on the verge to gaining power and displacing UMO, the ruling party. The ruling clique is obviously worried. He should work to decisively prove the charges wrong and once in for all clear his name. If he had succeeded, this would have continued to dodge him. It is an unfortunate distraction for him as he continues his battle to clear his name though.
As I listened to his account of his fight against UMO at the 2010 Oslo Freedom Forum, , I wondered whether the ruling UMO party will go away quietly. I don't believe it will. I will be continuing to monitor Anwar's on-going battles and will be periodically providing guidance on his predicaments.
He has a steep mountain to climb. I believe that he realizes that based on his speech in Oslo.
