SP Newsflash (2/24/2010): Latin America Breaking Free
It appears that the Latin Americans are beginning to finally break away from the North Americans. It is a development that should be of concern to policymakers in Washington.
This was announced at a summit in Mexico.
In my view, Mexico has a bit of a crediblity problem to have been the venue for such a major annoucement. Calderon is in the midst of a major war with the drug cartel. Thousands have died. For Mexico to have spreadheaded this "independence" leaves a lot to be desired. I would have been a lot more impressed if this was spreadheaded by Lula. Chavez has been making noises about breaking free from Yanqui imperialism for years and he has shown his true colors by his outright grab for power. The fact that they have made the move shows that they are letting go of their depedency. Despite my reservations, I still welcome this as another welcome sign of change.
Despite US pronoucements about the OAS being relevant, the reality is otherwise. When 27 countries go their way, the only countries remaining are the U.S. and Canada. It is another welcome sign about world realignment that would be exciting to watch. The world should take notice especially in light of Argentina's assertiveness over the Falklands yet again.
