SP Newsflash (1/8/2009): The US Unemployment Numbers
The talk of the town today has been the latest unemployment numbers. Although the "official" unemployment rate held at 10%, this is in large measure due to the fact that many stopped looking for work. Furthermore, the "real" rate continues to rise and there seems to be no end in sight.
I briefly saw Secretary Solis on CNN and Dr. Romer on MSNBC talking about it. What is apparent is that the "green shots" which I have continued to doubt will persist even more. Green Jobs that are supposedly the key to our future are yet to be funded. I called the Labor Department Hotline and they referred me to a number of job websites which I will pursue to see where it leads and I will report on it throughout the ensuing weeks. The problem is that jobs are needed now and people are hurting.
It seems that the Adminstration does understand it, although the normal spin campaign is very much in evidence:
The President will be making a statement on it in a little while which will hopefully underscore this.
