SP Newsflash (12/31/2009): The Carnage in Afghanistan
I decided to interrupt my year-end review here to report on the carnage in Afghanistan. A suicide bomber blew himself and killed 8 CIA officers with him. I have seen reports of between 8-13 total people who have been killed. I also just saw a report on France24 about a Journalist being killed in Southern Afghanistan while being escorted by Canadian Troops.
Although I continue to be hopeful as 2010 arrives, this kind of brutality and loss of life disheartens me. The Taliban will be as lethal as ever as President Obama's surge strategy continues to take shape. I continue to truly wonder if there can be a different way. I remain extremely leary of the strategy in large measure because of who continues to be in charge of the so-called Afghan Government in Kabul: Hamid Karzai.
