Some Brief Daily Notations on Afghanstain & Pakistan
Monday's Front Page Story in the New York Times detailed a report about one of Hamid Karzai's Brothers, Mohammad, being under investigation for corruption.
Mohammad is a US Citizen and has had extensive dealings in Afghanistan. He claims to be a businessman, but I am sure that if his last name was not Karzai--he would not be involved in housing developments in his family's hometown. His other brother, Ahmad Wali Karzai, is the head of the hometown council and one of the biggest drug dealers in the County. He has also been on the CIA's Payroll.
The parralells with Vietnam are clearly obvious. Monday was the first day I heard the expression "Vietnamestan". I actually did a Google search on it and it yielded 19,500 hits. Although I appreciate the positive spin the Obama Adminstration has tried to lay out on Afghanistan, the facts are the facts. There is no question that the United States and NATO have superior military capabilities. But, the Russians and the British also did and history reflects what happened to them.
As for Pakistan, well the tragedy continues to be compounded by the day, Gilani, the Prime Minister, urged Ministers who lost their immunity to resign. I have to wonder why he did not just fire them. Furthermore, it appears that Zardari's immunity is also being reviewed. Someone has to rise up to make sure that all the fools are thrown out. Musharaff wants to start a new Political Party. Does he have what it takes? I wonder...he at least tried, didn't he? I respect Musharaff because he at least called out Karzai for what he was: a Fraud.
The one thing I know is this: the drama is yet to play itself out.
