Sarko the Magician
Nicholas Sarkozy is a fascinating character. He somehow has that magic touch to make the right move as circumstances warrant. I remember him at the first G8 meeting, whereby he was the only guy on a cell phone while the rest of the bunch was smiling and having a merry of a time. He came out against the Burkha, yet he has come down firmly on the side of state intervention in Economic Affairs. "Sarko" is truly intriguing to observe.
What I found especially pointed was an account published in Haaretz about an encouter he had with the Israeli Prime Minister. He apparently counseled the Israeli leader to get rid of his Foreign Minister. He compared Mr. Lieberman to Jean Marie Le Pen, the French Far Right Leader that Sarkozy has helped to marginalize in France. Yet, Bibi sticks to his guns saying that actually Mr. Lieberman is a nice man. Bibi needs to truly figure out he wants peace. This is a government that says it is for peace, yet it is building settlements, wants a two state solution with so many conditions that it might as well not exist. All such policies have been based on a so-called understanding that has not existed and was flatly denied by Mrs. Clinton.
Although Mr. Lieberman may well be a nice man, but his actions and the action of the Israeli Government speak louder than words. President Sarkozy had the courage to tell The Israeli Prime Minister the truth. Will Bibi listen, though?
