Pakstan: Can it afford more turmoil?
Pakistan cannot seem to get a break. The so-called National Reconlication Ordinance that set the stage for the return of Bhutto and Sharif to power has expired. I am seeing reports that up to 8,000 people, including the President and the Interior Minister, will be subject to prosecution due to the on-going pending charges against them.
Right now, the main opposition is on a rampage. The Sharif Brothers are smelling blood again. I have written about the hypocracy of the Sharif Brothers all of a sudden espousing democratic tendencies when in fact they were the ones who helped push the country over the edge. Yet, as George W. Bush once said, this is pure politics. What is bothersome is that in the midst of a violent insurgency and total economic collapse, the last thing the country needs is more political instability. I also see reports that the Chief Justice will make a decision on the viability of the immunity of the President. Although I am not a fan of Zardari, it seems to me that the Chief Justice must remove himself from deliberations simply because of the conflict of interest. For someone who was for the rule of law, that should be the only right thing to do. The question is will he?
