"Oustiders" South-East Asia Watch (11/24/2011): Interesting Developments....
One of the most crucial news that I welcomed was the decision by Aung San Suu Kyi to re-enter politics. Her party, the National League for Democracy, has decided to end its' boycott and for the "Lady" to run in a Parliamentary by-election in the near future.
I have been waiting for such news for a very long time because the changes in Burma are an apparent realization that the World has changed. There are still many hurdles for the Burmese to overcome--but at least there seems to be a ray of hope. Beyond Burma, though, there is India.
What I am looking at is Rahul Gandhi's rise. He has been at the forefront of the rights of farmers in Uttar Pardish and their struggle for land rights. He has also been arrested and has risen to be an advocate for the poor and the dispossessed. What I wonder is whether this advocacy will prompt her to eventually take over Congress and be Prime Minister. He certainly has the family legacy to live up to as India gears up to be ready for the next National Election as it debates crucial issues such as Corruption which paralyzed the Country last year.
Beyond India and Burma, I have one more development that is a bit of a worrisome development. I reviewed a Financial Times report about Labor unrest in China as factories begin to cut back orders as the World begins retrench.
What happens in South East Asia Matters because it is still serving as an engine of growth around the World and whether this can be sustained remains to be seen.
A Lot to reflect upon......
