Our Debt To Our Veterans
I have been very interested in the plight of Veterans. I saw this nice booklet that has been released by the Department of Veterans Affairs and available at the Department of Veterans Affairs website. I see many online capabilities available that is in line with what I have at times written about in Outsider Views about the need to enact "Smart Government". So, when I received this from one my students, I was shocked:
I am a Veteren and the Veteren Administration messed up my summer application to my GI Bill Ch. 30. So i did not get my monthly payment on the 6th so I was not able to get my books. I got behind on rent and all my utilities got shut off. So my 2 lil girls and I ended up staying with my parents for the past 2 weeks. Tomorrow I will finally recieve my money and be able to buy my books from amazon.com but I will not recieve them in the mail til Monday at the latest. I will start participating more now and turn in all current work that I can turn in. I know this sounds like all excuses but I had to at least send you an email after 2 weeks of no contact.
Although I welcome the President's committment to take care of the Veterans, even one Veteran going through this is simply not acceptable. I am certain that the key officials appointed by the President will see to it that this does not happen. If we fail our veterans, we have failed as a nation.
