Oct 24: The World-Wide Day of Action
Saturday October 24 was the Day of Action to highlight the challenges our "spacship earth" faces. The challenges we face are simply too much. I was out at a community event encouraging recycling with my Son's Cup Scout Troop.
The world seems to be aware and realize the challenge before us. I had seen data that Carbon Emissions must not rise above 550 PPM to avoid the disastrous effects of climate change. The world is cooling, but the profound changes in the world cannot be ignored anymore. Countries in the world are taking the lead, though. What the UK has done, for instance, with the Carbon Trust is a enticing idea whose time has come. Unfortunately, America is playing catch up in a big way and the entrentched opposition is pressing its case in a major way. I am also seeing interesting developments by Nissan and Toyota on the hybrid and the Electric Car Front. GM is committed to the Volt--due to ship in 2010. But, the issue of the grid, the production and mining of Litium and the subsequent sustainability is something that is also an issue. The CEO of Royal Dutch Shell talked about in a recent Financial Times Article.
As 350.org's day of action did show, the world has arisen. I find that quite refreshing. The challenge is one of courage. One courageous guy is Van Jones. As I was seeing the lumanires who were going to be part of this, I saw his name. He was President Obama's key guy on Climate Change. Unfortunately, he had to resign in part due to the relentless campaign against him. I am glad to see that he will not stay silent on this vital issue that threatens us all. We all have to do our part. There lies the continued challenge.
