Barack Obama: Christian or Muslim, the Conservative Right Can’t have it Both Ways
Barack Obama was under fire for comments made by his former Pastor Jeremiah Wright. Obama attempted to distance himself from Reverend Wright initially by shooting down the remarks the retired Pastor of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, Illinois yet still calling Reverend Wright his friend. He told the American public that he was not in attendance when Reverend Wright gave his infamous “God Damn” America speech. Reverend Wright after weeks of being vilified by the press finally spoke out and called Barack Obama politician who does what politicians do. The minister appeared flippant at best forcing Barack Obama’s hand in formally denouncing him.
Conservatives argue that this is not enough. It is a testament to Barack Obama’s judgment. Republicans also believe that he could not possible be so oblivious of the ways of his former Pastor when he was a patron of the church for over 20 years. They say that Reverend Wright was his spiritual mentor therefore if Reverend Wright feels that way then Barack Obama must feel that way as well.
This is in direct contrast however, with the right wing conspiracy suggesting Obama is a Muslim who was taught in a madrassa, a radical Muslim School. First, this rumor perpetuated by Fox News and smears are flat out lies. You can have it both ways conservatives. Either you decide this man has been a Christian for the past 20 years or he is a not. Again, the fear mongers try to insinuate that he is a radical Muslim who will turn over the keys to the White House to Islamic militants. The Right needs to make up their minds in how they want to attack this man. The main reason that nothing is sticking is that thank goodness, Most of America is smarter than the conservative right.
