Mexico: A Tragic Tale
I have written about the Mexican Drug War in SP's sister site, Outsider Views. It goes without saying that the recent assassination of a leading candidate for Governor and four of his aides shocked me to the core. Although the reports of the atrocities are coming out daily, it seems as if they just don't stop.
The Sunday Edition of the LA Times featured the State Security For Felipe Calderon's Home State almost killed recently. The Drug Gangs have so infested the police and judiciary that no one is really safe. This is what true terrorism is. Thousands have been killed. What is even more worrisome is that cops in Nogales, Arizona are starting to get death threats.
I had written about not wanting to blame anyone. But, I knew this day was coming when America launched its' attack on Iraq. As America continues to be mired in wars it did not have to fight, now it has to contend with such challenges while its hands are tied. There was virtually no attention given to the soft underbelly. Poverty has been the disease that has given rise to the tragedy that is Mexico today.
I never forget when children were selling gum to make ends meet. The scenes were horrific. The Drug gangs saw an opening and drove a truck through it. Furthermore, with Mexico's oil gradually withering away as the source of income, matters are bound to get worst.
What I find even more tragic is that America is focused on the Gulf, the Kagan Nomination, the John Edwards Affair, the Al Gore sexual harrasement "matter and the Mel Gibson restraining order war. What now about Mexico, though? I wonder if anyone has a true answer?
