Is Chavez justified in his paranoia?
Hugo Chavez seems to continue to have a sense of paranoia that I have been trying to understand. He has been on an arms buying binge. I seem to begin to get an understanding of this paranoia after reading up a bit of Chomsky recently. Noam Chomksy, the MIT Linugist and famed activist, has been at the forefront of what I regard as "true realism" in U.S. Foreign Policy analysis for the longest time.
In one of his lectures, he talked about something called "Operation Mongoose". This is something that has never been reported in the media. It is not in the standard history texts. Yet, it was an operation that was spreadheaded by President Kennedy that apparently had the explicit aim to overthrow Fidel Castro. Although the United States has gotten out of the business of overthrowing governments, Chavez has history to go by. I have to wonder whether he should channel this paranoia somewhere else.
