India: Rising (or falling)......
As I begin anew here in "outsiders", my focus here will be on Southeast Asia. India is one of the so-called BRICS which constitute part of the emerging block of nations that will challenge the Group of 8 for political and economic supremacy around the World. The BRICS are Brazi, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
One of the BRICS, India, is in major difficulty. I have been reviewing reports of the looming corruption Scandal that has engulfed the highest echelons of the Indian Political Elite. The head of the Commonwealth Games was arrested after investigations revealed how he fixed contracts. I personally got sick after I read the first two paragraphs of the Al Jazeera write-up on it yesterday.
Corruption in India has been an apparent fact of life. Everyone is on the take in India. There is also the continued Grand Canyon that exists between the rich and poor. Overlooking the slumms of Mumbai stand the 27-Story building that is now the home of the Ambani Clan. It is a gorgeous building--but 90% of the people of India have to struggle to figure out how to sometimes even make their daily bread. Although I personally like the Prime Minister, this latest scandal has happened under his watch. He has to figure out what his ultimate legacy is. The question is whether he has the backbone to do it.
