First African American Candidate of a Major Political Party: Barack Obama
I couldn’t stop crying. As I watched the tears pour amongst the crowd of people officially nominate Barack Obama as the candidate of the Democratic party, I too had to take a moment to absorb what was really happening here. Republicans can’t ignore the historic nature of Obama’s nomination. The first African American delegate to take a seat at the Democratic convention was in 1936. Now here we are. One of the many reasons I am proud to be an American is that we attempt to make our wrongs right. It may not be soon enough for some. We have come such a long way.
But after all of the tears I smiled because today proved that their suffering was not in vain. Barack Obama stands on the prayers, wounds, and tears of those before him. In addition, regardless of if you believe he should be President or not, you have to acknowledge this historic moment in American history.
