Chomsky Speaks: Will the World listen?
Noam Chomksy is one of the most interesting social critics of our time. He has spoken truth when no one has bothered to listen. He had a wide-ranging discussion which I have decided to feature in this write-up.
The striking feature for me is when he spoke about GITMO. The US Conservative establishment has pushed GITMO to be kept open and the fact that The Obama Adminstration is trying to overturn a decision on Bagram is quite striking too. He basically tore apart the rhetoric and the reality of what is going on with Anti-terror policy and some of the misguided strategy on Iran. This was striking and timely especially as Mike Pence came out with his statement attacking the President's Outreach to "enemies". I was laughing when he talked about the U.S defintion of the International Community. The U.S. defines the International Community as simply this: Whoever agrees with them at the time!!! My reaction to that was: Right on!!!
Chomksy has had the courage to speak truth to power for over 50 years. The question is whether those in power today have the courage to listen to him. The naive in me says they will. The realist in me says they won't. In the meantime, the rhetoric continues to be heated ever more.
