China & the US: A Game of Chicken
Barack Obama met with the Dalai Lama yesterday at the White House. I congratulate the President for standing up for principle in spite of the concerted campaign by the Chinese Government to stop the meeting. The U.S Ambassador has been summoned by the Chinese Foreign Ministry to protest the meeting.
As the President stepped up to do what was morally right, the relationship with China has to be treated in a delicate manner. There is the issue of the continued backing of Taiwan. I think that the Taiwan question has to be resolved somehow. Selling 6 Billion Dollars worth of arms is something that I wonder if it was the right thing to do.
I see this game of chicken continuing for a while yet. Although China is now the second biggest creditor to the U.S., they continue to be a net buyer of U.S. Debt. With the train wreck that is the U.S. Economy right now, who knows how long they will want to invest in America. I'm certain that the Adminstration realizes that.
