China as seen by Zhao
Zhao was China's leader during Tinanmen. He was sacked by the Paramount leader Deng as a prelude to the blood crackdown. His journal has recently been smuggled out and published in the west.
I remember that bloody day. I remember the courageous man who stood before tanks when they rolled into the famous square. The world stayed silent. China rose from the ashes. I also think that the period made the Chinese Leadership understand how to adapt and change. It gave rise to the current Prime Minister, Wen and the President. Inequalities and suppression of decent remains prevalent. But, at least both men have understood that they have to make sure the people are taken care of. Images of President Hu spending new years day with miners deep underground is interesting scenery indeed.
Zhao passed away last year. His legacy of reform lives on. On a side note, the New US Ambassador-Designate to China is a very, very interesting choice.
