As We Begin the Final Month of 2009....
The economic situation continues to be as shaky as ever. Although the U.S. grow during the 3rd Quarter, that growth is not translating into jobs. In SP's sister site, Outsider Views, I recently wrote about "Voices from the Street Corners". This phenomenon I saw was validated by a story in the Monday edition of USA Today noting that citizens have taken to street corners to get jobs and to compete with migrant workers.
Beyond the United States, there is of course Dubai. Dubai World has been asking for a moratorium on its' debt. I released a write-up about the potential challenge it represented to the sovereign debt of the United Arab Emirates. My eyes nearly popped out when I saw a statement by Dubai's Finance Minister that Dubai World is not Dubai. My reaction was: now what?
Now, moving halfway around the world, the Australians have decided to raise interest rates for the third month in a row. I wonder if that is a sign of things to come. I also am seeing reports that GE and Vivendi have agreed on terms to sell NBC Universal. I wonder what will happen to the continued consolidation in media. This notion of choice seems to be a luxury, not a necessity. That's why New Media and the work we all do within it must as vibrant as ever.
