As Iran Mourned A Senior Cleric...What Now!??!??!/
I noted in SP's sister site, Outsider Views, that Iran's Senior Dissident Cleric Grand Ayatollah Montazeri died early Monday and was buried in the Holy City of Qum on Monday. Ayatollah Montazeri was one of the leading theorists of the system we now how as the Islamic Republic of Iran. He turned against the system and paid a heavy price for it. What I found very surprising was a statement issued by the current leader, Ayatollah Khameini, expressing condolosecnes on his death. I thought about whether the opposition will now unite in opposition to the current ruling clique running the country.
As I have written before in SP's Sister sites, Outsider Views & Kitten Politics, Iran is now effectively run by the Revolutionary Guard. The militarization of the country seems to be set in stone for now. Factions within the military are not happy with the state of affairs either. The economy is in trouble. The country is paralyzed politically. I wonder whether Mr. Montazeri's death will unit the opposition as ever before. The key players, Karoubi and Moussavi, continue to profess their loyalty to the Islamic Republic. But when the key architect regime questioned the essentials of the system itself, then the opposition has to be questioning the rationale of the regime itself. The implications for the country and the region will be profound.
