The House of Representatives Can Keep Its Apology for Slavery and Jim Crow

An Apology Would Not Have Healed This Man's Wounds

The House of Representatives passed a resolution apologizing to African Americans for slavery and the era of Jim Crow. I must say I thought this day would never come. Although no politician in his/her right mind would actually state this, slavery is often looked upon as a necessary evil. Where would the United States be without hundreds of years of free labor?

Truth be told, as an African American woman, I could care less. The House of Representatives needs to put their money where their mouth is. No conservative jerks, I am not talking about reparations. I am talking about equal education. I am talking about little Keisha who lives in the Brooklyn housing projects having the same access to current school books, computers, and credentialed teachers as little Sally in Beverly Hills. Even if a child is at the top of their game in an inner city school, many of them will walk into college with a massive disadvantage. I don’t want the House to create any special resolutions or laws. I would just like for them to ensure that the current ones are enforced. It is the law for all children to get an equal education isn’t it? Barack Obama wrote about a Chicago High School victim to budget cuts in his New York Times best seller, The Audacity of Hope. This school was forced to eliminate all of its elective courses and end the day at 1:30pm. Let’s all go back to our High School years and remember all of the trouble we could’ve gotten into between 1:30pm and the time our parent came home from work. Without our children (our is all inclusive) America has no hope for its future. We are mortgaging our most precious resource.

I digress. At least 2 million Africans--10 to 15 percent--died during the infamous "Middle Passage" across the Atlantic. Another 15 to 30 percent died during the march to or confinement along the coast. Altogether, for every 100 slaves who reached the New World, another 40 had died in Africa or during the Middle Passage. I believe the House of Representatives can do a little better than a fancy letter essentially saying “My Bad”.
